Staying Motivated During the Madness

“Whenever you find yourself doubting how far you can go, just remember how far you have come. Remember everything you have faced, all the battles you have won, and all the fears you have overcome.” – Unknown

Motivation is the reason behind a particular act or behavior. Inspiration is the process of being stimulated mentally to do or feel something. The difference between the two is action. Inspiration is easy but motivation is hard. We lose excitement and we get distracted. We get discouraged after we slip up and we struggle getting back on track.

This is normal, but we need to change our mentality if we want to get anywhere. In today’s society there are so many things to inspire us, but more often than not – inspiration is all it is. When we get caught up in the world around us we lose sight of what is important. Sometimes when that happens we find ourselves looking in retrospect to see where we made a wrong turn. It is then that we must find a reason to make a change.

So, how do we do that? A person that is highly motivated is willing to risk it all for success. They put their goals as a priority, seem almost a little insane and are often referred to as over achievers. They are optimists and determined because they want it more than anything. The reason behind this is simple: their mentality.

In order to stay motivated you have to change your way of thinking and become more like the person I just described. To become that person you need to figure out what drives you to be better. How do we stay disciplined in a world that is full of temptations? First of all there are several types of motivation. Motivations can be based on fear, incentives, power struggles, social gains, personal growth etc.

What motivates us to do things is important because our surroundings are constantly changing. Some people are motivated by short term goals: fitting into a dress, running a race, bikini season, a good grade on a test, specific purchase etc. While others strive for long term goals: buying a home or car, owning a business, earning a degree, starting a family. Sometimes goals are created when hardships take place or achievements are won. Whatever the reasons behind our goals are, it takes a huge amount of motivation and self discipline in order to reach them. Some people have no problem reaching their goals, while the rest of us struggle to get through daily life. Most of us have to drag ourselves out of bed in the morning while others are up before dawn running. Sound familiar? Or course it does! It happens to us all! The real question is how do we stay motivated in order to see real changes?

Here are five ways that we can stay ahead of the game

1. Figure out your why
Where do you find your inspiration? What is pushing you to achieve a specific goal? What is significant about that situation? Write it down and put it somewhere you can see it!
Visualization is a great way to stay on track. Put up pictures and quotes where you can see them daily.

2. Make a list of your goals
Write down everything you want to accomplish and an estimated time frame you would like to see that happen. You can also write down how you plan to reach these goals. Seeing short term goals and what they lead up to is a wonderful way to stay motivated.

3. Establish Accountability
Share your goals and your motive with someone that can hold you accountable and ask them to help you stay on track even when you get discouraged. Make sure they understand the importance of your goals and your desire to achieve them!

4. Make it happen
Set aside some time every day to work on your goals. Make it a priority and never be ashamed of letting others know that you plan to succeed. Hard work is what makes dreams come true – no excuses! Educate yourself and plan ahead.

5. Reward yourself
Praise yourself each time you reach a milestone for a job well done. Receiving praise increases our confidence, makes us feel good which releases our happy hormones and it fuels us to keep going. Who doesn’t like a little praise!?

The most important tool to staying motivated and disciplined is simple: Figure out your “why?” and stay inspired. If you start reaching the goals you set for yourself your quality of life will improve drastically. You will be healthier and happier. You will earn the respect of others and you will learn to love the person you are becoming.
